EQUALITY! - a dance piece for young audience
Premiere 16th September 2020
Theater ROXY Birsfelden

What is equality?  How can you explain equality to children?  Can gender equality be physically experienced?

EQUALITY! is about a woman and a man who want to be the same. With full physical engagement, they find all sorts of absurd, humorous, serious ways to show what equality between two people of different gender might look like. The audience is sitting around the two dancers and become directly part of how the two develop dance strategies in order to come together in being "equal", equally challenged, equally acknowledged and equally seen. Even if it gets hard, they won't give up.

A dance piece for everyone from age 8.

Background

In the winter of 2018/19, Rebecca Weingartner and Benjamin Lindh Medin were invited to a "Choreographic Laboratory for Young Audience" organized by RESO, dance network Switzerland, to develop their project idea "Equality!". The project explores what happens when the emphasis of gender perception is reversed by not focusing on differences between sexes of men and women, but what actually is the same or similar. With this idea, boundaries and ideas which are connected with the social gender are performatively questioned. The two-week residence took place under the direction of choreographer Erik Kaiel. In linking the project idea together with questions concerning creation for young audiences, a 15-minute piece was created. This was performed at the end of the Choreo Lab for a school class in Monthey.

In September 2019, the short piece was shown in a further developed version at the Young Dance Zug Festival, Switzerland's only dance festival for young audiences. The feedback and reactions of the children in the following round of talks inspired the further creation process, gave new input and were a big motivation to continue to develop "Equality!". It is planned to continue the cooperation with children in several phases in order to involve their feedback into the creative process. The project is state funded by Fachausschuss Tanz and Theater Basel-Stadt/ Basel-Landschaft and a full piece premiered at Theatre ROXY Birsfelden, Switzerland in September of 2020. Two weeks due to the premiere, Rebecca Weingartner injured her knee, but to make sure to still do the premiere, we found Laetitia Kohler as a replacement during this round. There is another round of performances planned at Theater Roxy in autumn 2021. Further, "Equality!" is planned to perform in various locations around Switzerland both in spring and autumn 2021. Due to Covid-19 and the injury, some performances will be with Rebecca and some with Rebecca. More information about coproductions will come soon.
